Mi’kmaq Language Translation Considerations

Mi’kmaq is classified as a vulnerable language by Unesco, so translating into English into Mi’kmaq requires a specialized approach distinct from more commonly spoken languages. Our team has the necessary experience and expertise to navigate these unique challenges. Here are some key considerations:

  • Limited Speakers: While the Mi’kmaq population is approximately 20,000, there are less than 8,000 native speakers left. Experienced and reliable Mi’kmaq translators are very limited in their availability and combine their passion for language with busy schedules.
  • Writing systems: There’s no writing standard as different communities use a few spelling systems. The Francis-Smith Orthography is one of the most commonly used spelling systems. The Grand Council of Chiefs declared it the official writing system of the Mi’kmaq Nation. It is used in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, and parts of New Brunswick. The Listuguj Orthography is used in Quebec, more specifically along the southwestern shore of the Gaspe Peninsula where the Listuguj dialect is most commonly spoken. Pacifique Orthography is less common and still used in parts of New Brunswick.
