Need An Atikamekw Translation? We Can Help.
Atikamekw (Nehirâmowin) (alternatively spelled Attikamek, Attikamekw, Atikamekw, Attimewk, or Attikamegue), also known as the “r” dialect, is a dialect belonging to the Algonquian Cree language family. Of the Cree language, it is unique in that it borrows many words from the Anishinaabe language (Ojibwe). It is spoken throughout southwestern Quebec by nearly all of the Atikamekw people (95%), making it one of the indigenous languages least in danger of dying out.
Atikamekw means “whitefish”, although the people have many other original names such as Tete-de-boule, Iriniw or Nehiyaw. The language status is “developing” with nearly 6,000 speakers. Historically, second language spoken in the Atikamekw communities is French, with only some people using English for work-related communication.
