Freelancer Frequently Asked Questions

Our company is regularly looking for talented translators, typesetters and localization engineers to join our roster of freelance providers.  Below are some of the questions our translators ask before beginning work on our projects.

Q: What needs to be translated? What is the subject? Is it text or does it include audio/visual content?
A: For the majority of projects, wintranslation deals with text-based documents such as MS Word, PDF or Excel files. On occasion we may have a project involving audio/video files. The length of the documents and the subject matter depends wholly on each of our clients.

Q: Do I need to move? Do I need to come to your office?
A: No. You may work from home or from anywhere you are comfortable and we do not need to meet you in person. One of our Project Managers will regularly be in contact with you by phone and/or email.

Q: Am I obligated to work on any projects?
 A: No, you would not be obligated to take on any new projects. We understand that as a freelancer your schedule may not allow for a new project. One of our Project Managers will contact you to see if you are available before beginning a project.

Q: What do I need to send you to become a freelancer for you?
 A: To be a freelancer on our roster, we will need a copy of your resume, including ALL of the following:

  • physical address
  • phone number
  • email address
  • language pairings
  • education/qualifications

You will also need to provide us with your per word rate for both translation and proofreading/revision services. To apply, please email this information to recruiting at

Translation samples may be requested for certain language pairings. Samples are required to be 500-1000 words in length and be of flowing written text. (No lists of terms, birth certificates, etc)

Please note that wintranslation will require that you complete, sign and return a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and a Payment Details form before providing you with any translation projects.

Q: Will I be paid?
A: Yes, absolutely. We pay our freelance translators for all completed projects.

Q: When and how will I be paid?
A: We will issue payment within 45 days of receiving your invoice. We prefer operating by direct deposit, so we will ask you to provide some basic banking information.

Q: How long are the translations? How long will they take? When are they due?
 A: Each project will have its own set of unique documents which will vary in length and subject matter. We will ensure you are aware of the due dates of the files before beginning work on each project.

Q: Am I an employee? Can I still work other jobs? How much work will I get from you?
A: As a freelancer we consider you a provider of a valuable resource, but you are not an employee in the usual sense. You are free and even encouraged to do other work, since contracts might be sporadic and occasional, depending on the demand from our clients.

Q: Do I need to register as a business and get an HST number?
 A: You do not need to register as a business to be a freelance provider. You will only need an HST number if your total revenues from freelancing are over $30.000 per year. (Canadian residents only).

Q: What do I need to send in once I’m done?
 A: We will require the translated files returned as specified by the Project Manager. Normally this will be the same format as the original files, but other formats may be required. Please ask the Project Manager for any needed clarification.
