Romanian Language

Romanian (sometimes spelled Rumanian or Roumanian) is an official language in Romanian and Moldova. It is also one of the official languages of the European Union. There are approximately 25 million Romanian speakers living both within the country and abroad.

Romanian evolved from the Latin language and is said to be the one language which remains closest to it’s Latin roots. Over many centuries there have been influences from several other languages including Greek, German, Turkish, French and Italian.

Due to the history of the language, Romanian has many dialects and it is debated just how many there are. It is commonly divided into two two to five different dialects – Wallachian and Moldavian being the main dialects, with Banat, Crișana and Maramureș dialects sometimes being defined. Be sure to research which dialect or region your Romanian text is intended for!
