Type of numeral systems
Decimal and thousands separators

 

Numeral systems around the World:

Hindu-Arabic numerals or Arabic numerals – most common system used today around the World: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9

Eastern Arabic numerals – used today by Arab countries together with Arabic numerals: ٠.١.٢.٣.٤.٥.٦.٧.٨.٩

Chinese numerals: 〇 一 二 三 四 五 六 七 八 九

Japanese numerals: Arabic numerals are mostly used to in horizontal writing and Chinese numerals in vertical writing

 

Decimal and thousands separators

Comma as decimal separator

Most countries in Europe will use comma as a decimal separator and a space or a point as a thousands separator.

E.g.:

France, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, etc: 999 999,00

French Canada: 999 999,00

Germany, Belgium, Italy, Romania, etc: 999 999,00 or 999.999,00

Netherlands: a dot is used as thousand separator for currencies (EUR 999.999,00) and a space for any other numbers

Comma as thousands separator

United States, Canada (English), Australia, China, Japan, Australia, United Kingdom: comma as a decimal separator, dot as a thousands separator

E.g.: 999,999.00

Unlucky numbers in different cultures

North America and part of Europe: number 13

- Lots of buildings in North America do not have the 13th floor
-Some airports do not have gates numbered as 13 (JFK airport)

In Italy, the number 13 is considered a lucky number

China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam: number 4

- Some buildings in East Asia do not have the 4th floor;
- None of Nokia's cell phones series is beginning with number 4
- The Canon PowerShot G series of digital cameras skipped the G4 model name due to cultural superstitions

Italy: number 17

- well know Italian airline company - Alitalia - do not have the a seat with the number 17
- Renault sold it's R17 model in Italy as R177
