Recently
a client asked WTB to recruit a Bahasa Indonesian
translator. It is the first time I deal
with this particular language so I decided
to find out more about it. Bahasa Indonesian
is the official language of Indonesia and
the word Bahasa means "language."
You might have also heard of "Bahasa
Malay," it means the language of Malay
and it is one of the official languages
of Malaysia and Singapore.
Something
else I learned recently was the difference
between Dutch and Flemish. I often come
across translators who do translations in
both languages and I wonder what the connection
is between the two languages. To find out
the answer, I asked Jeeves (it is a useful
web site www.ask.com). Here is what I found
out: Flemish is the Belgium dialect of Dutch.
People in the Netherlands and Belgium both
speak and write Dutch. But the people of
Belgium have developed some unique characteristics
of their own related to the Dutch language.
Therefore came the name Flemish (Dutch-speaking
Belgians are called Flemings).
I
guess there is always something new to be
learned at any job!
