My trip to the Search Engine Strategies (SES) Conference in New York

By Felicia BRATU

I always dreamt about seeing New York. And this month, right on my birthday, my dream came true. I went to New York for a Search Engine conference.  I not only prepared and documented this visit for a week - arranged an itinerary, prepared maps with all the places I wanted to see - but I even bought a pair of nice, fancy spring boots, specifically for this event. This was also my first real trip to The United States (I won’t count the malls from Detroit as I don't think they represent the American culture... or do they?).

I believe that everybody should visit New York once in their life time. It's a pity to live so close and yet not visit such a city. And I'm not referring here to visiting the New York malls… (which are great by the way, good discounts!), not even about the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State building... I am mostly talking about the people and spring. New York is so full of life and it's so diverse. There are so many people on the streets, everybody in a rush, everybody so in fashion - I've never seen so many women wearing Prada handbags in my life (actually, I’ve never seen a Prada handbag before). Day or night, the city is alive and everywhere you go in Manhattan there is something that captures your eyes.

I had a toothache for most of the time I was there and I had to stay in bed a lot... in the middle of Manhattan! I was so mad: here I am, in New York, and I have to stay in my room and take medication! My dream is becoming a nightmare. Why is this happening to me! Such a great occasion to visit and take pictures (and show those at home so everybody will envy me)!  I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t speak and the right side of my face was swollen and puffy from the tooth abscess. I couldn't eat any solid food for a few days, and there was free food at the SES (Search Engine Strategies) conference! Rand Fishkin’s trademark are his yellow shoes - mine was now my deformed face. Rand is one of the conference speakers, a very well known SEO personality (not for me, I didn’t know him before which means that I didn’t know too much about SEO before this conference). I only knew (not personally, though) Danny Sullivan – which by the way, I believe needs a hairdo. Nice person, very good speaker, a lot of charisma, blue eyes, but still, something is wrong with that hair.

Anyway, I am kidding here, I don't want those SEO people to get mad at me. They have a lot of power over the web. They know some magic ways to control what happens in there. Remember what happened to Bush and the “miserable failure" story. It’s still number one on Yahoo. Long life to outbound links and anchor text!

I was expecting to see Eric Ward there - I chose one of the conferences solely to hear him talk about link building, but it wasn’t my week. His wife was in labor to give birth.

One of the things I have learned about SEO is that a good way to get links is to have good content, write articles with tips, how to… top 10 myths for a specific category, etc.
So, here is my first top 10 list. Nothing here to be used for link building, but it helps with my frustration!

My pathetic trip to New York: My top 10 troubles list

  1. I had a persistent toothache

  2. Because of the toothache I couldn’t eat

  3. I couldn’t eat, but I didn’t shed any pounds

  4. I didn’t have time to visit Macy’s

  5. the day I got better it started to rain

  6. the rain destroyed my new, fancy boots

  7. a water pipe broke in my hotel and I didn’t have water for a day

  8. Eric Ward wasn’t there

  9. I spent my birthday in bed

  10. I missed the first episode of the last series of Stargate SG1 because my hotel TV didn’t have the SciFi Channel.

Maybe I should have made other lists, like: top 10 presentations I enjoyed at SES New York, or top 10 ways to create link baiting (very in style at the moment); or top 10 good looking speakers at the SES conference, but I’ll leave these for another time.
I was also thinking about writing an article in the “How to…” category. I understand that this is also a good link baiting method. However, I can’t decide if I should write about How to catch a taxi in New York or How to create and optimize a postacast.

In the end, when the plane landed home, I realized that in fact, I had a great time in New York: I met lots of people there and learnt many new things at the SES conference, and I got lots of magazines and press releases from there – again, free stuff!
