Malay Language

Malay is a major language of Polynesia from which the Malaysian and Indonesian languages are based. It is an official language in several countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. There are many people living outside of these countries who speak the language – there are an estimated 125 million speakers living worldwide.

Malay does share some similarities with other Polynesian languages including Sudanese, Balinese and Tagalog. There are a number of languages from which Malay has borrowed words over time. Arabic, Tamil, Portuguese and Dutch loan words are all a part of Malay.
