Lithuanian is the official language in Lithuania and is also one of the official languages of the European Union. The oldest written Lithuanian texts only date back to c. 1500 AD however the language is believed to have formed around 800 AD. There are currently around 3.4 million people who speak the language.

Lithuanian is most closely related to the Latvian language, however the two languages are not mutually intelligible. There are a number of languages which have influenced Lithuanian with loanwords, including English, Polish and Belarussian.
