What kinds of output options
are available and what are the pros and cons of each?
There are two output options
1) high-resolution PDF files 2) outlined EPS files. Our standard
offer is high-resolution PDF files that are ready for print.
It is the most efficient and the only possible way to handle
a large-volume (100 pages, for example) job. In order to output
the PDF, the client needs to provide all the elements involved
in the design such as pictures, graphs and fonts. The pros
of PDF output is that it entails less work for the client
and the typesetter; Plus it is cost-effectiveness; the con
is that the client will have less control over the final output.
PDF output is recommended for most scenarios. EPS outline
is used only when the output is intended to be used as a design
component like a graphic.
My client sent me a Word
file with Chinese text and PC Chinese font (It does not print
and I can’t import the text in vector format). I would
want to have this text typeset in more than one font, and
changed into Vector, or PDF, so I can import the text in my
layout. Do you provide that service?
Certainly. We have many
Chinese fonts on PC, suiting your different design needs.
A font sheet can be created for you to choose from. We will
then create the outlined text, using the specified fonts that
can be used for you design.
If I only have the budget
to typeset my material into one dialect of Chinese, should
I choose Simplified Chinese or Traditional?
You should choose Traditional
Chinese. It is understood by Chinese people with different
background and origins.
I understand vertical layout
is a popular option in Chinese, when should I choose vertical
layout?
Traditional vertical Chinese
layout is still used in newspaper, signs, letters and books
but not necessarily effective for many modern readers. In
addition, it is used more often in Traditional Chinese. For
formal documents related to science and business, we recommend
the horizontal layout only.
Do you have any quality
assurance process with regard to Chinese typesetting?
Yes. WTB Quality Assurance
process has been developed to ensure that every project completed
by our company meets high quality standards.
All the Chinese typesetting projects are the subject to a
rigorous and systematic QA process:
• Check if there are pages, or pictures, or text paragraphs
missing· Check if the text is place in its proper
place, and is in Chinese language
• Check if all the figures were localized, and saved
in the right format, and resolution
• Check on punctuation: Some punctuation marks are
similar to their equivalent Western ones, but larger, to
suit the characters that surround the mark, for example,
the Chinese comma (,) is larger than its Western counterpart.
Chinese period is a small circle. In Chinese there are book
title marks, «book title», (what in English
rendered as italicization or underlining); and chapter marks,
<chapter title>, (what in English would be quotation
marks).
• Check on line ending and line breakingChinese typesetting
does not put space between words. A line may be broken at
nearly any point, and hyphens are not used if a word is
broken across two lines.
• Check for consistent spacing between elements such
as headlines and body copy or gutters between columns of
text; consistent list/bullet format.
