International Golf Products case study: Localizing Instructional DVD into French
International Golf Products is a recognized leader in the development, marketing and distribution of high quality branded golf accessories, teaching aids and gifts for the golf consumer. The company needed to reproduce their existing instructional DVD for several golf training aids into French.
The Challenge
The instructional DVD was to be sold in Canada through a large corporation and it therefore needed to meet the requirements of having both the official Canadian languages (English and French). The end product was to be in DLT format.
DLT is a digital tape system and is usually a backup tape format. Our technical specialist spoke with the client to obtain background information, the desired end-result, and to understand their need for DLT format. Our technical specialist explained the different possible formats that could be used and the best format for this particular project.
The client decided that a DVD is what they needed. Though it was possible for us to produce a final copy in DLT format, for projects such as this and for what the client specified, DLT is not a common format.
The Solution
Several teams were set up for this project to cover the different production levels. Our transcriber transcribed the audio from the DVD, inserting time codes and informational text needed for translation and recording purposes. The transcription was reviewed for accuracy by another transcriber.
The transcription along with a copy of the DVD was sent for translation. One translator was used to translate and a second for editing and proofreading. The DVD copy was used to obtain complete understanding of language tone and context. As requested, the translation was sent to our client for review.
Voice-talents were selected based on language, gender, and age. For this particular project, two voice-talents were needed for two different speakers on the video. The voice talents were native French, male, middle-aged. Recording was done with professional equipment. The voice talents timed and edited the audio to fit the required time segments.
Our technical specialist worked with the files such as, inserted the voice-over, creating the on-screen French text, and rendered the new French DVD.
The Benefits
The technical background our specialist provided to the client allowed the end-product to be in the desired format the client needed. The ability for wintranslation.com to perform all aspects of the project facilitated the steps the client needed to make delivering a product ready for the Canadian market.
